What exactly do you want them to do? If you want patents in India, that's the way to go. If you want patents here, it's illegal for them to represent you unless they are a registered patent attorney/agent.

As for law (not just preparing and prosecuting patent application), it's illegal for anyone other than an attorney to practice U.S. law. If there are a member of a state bar here in the U.S. but reside in India, it might be possible. It would depend on the requirements of the specific state in which they are bar members.

I'm not saying that's the way it ought to be; that's just the way the law is.

In specific answer to your question, no, I've never heard of that (probably for the difficulties outlined above).
