: : Can someone help me out. I have a good idea for a invention. I am a little confused about the patent process though. If you file a patent application and then market what you invented, how will you be gauranteed a patent from the patent office of the US, or any other country, when someone in another country can copy your product and then file a patent in there country and claim to have invented it first? Do you have to wait until the patent issues before you can market the invented product. : Thanks in advance, Roy Dear Roy, The first question is, whether or not adequate patent protection is available to you. JUST getting a patent may not mean the protection you would like. If the patent is valuable, there is some protection. A US filing gives treaty priority in MANY of the major counties of the world for one yeat. Without foreign patents imports that infringe the domestic patent can be dealt with. Before you worry about forengn patents, you must protect what you have with secrecy. You must find a Registered Patent Lawyer you can trust. I repeat, "YOU CAN TRUST" and see what can be done. JUST getting a patent my be an expensive waste of time, money and worry. M.
