Can Fish be Trademarked?

There is a growing controversy that when people combine different colors of fish for a new coloration, then give it a "strain name" (for example Apple Pie Angel Fish) they claim a trademark. The worst part is these same people sell you this Apple Pie fish and then claim you can't call it that if you sell it.

My question is can Fish (strain names, color combo's) be trademarked?
