What is the Statute of Limitations for infringement?

Can I be sued for trademark infringement over 3 years after one alleged infringing comment I made? (US FEDERAL COURTS) The makers of "Barney" extracted a comment over the phone from me back in Feb of 1995. They claim I said I could offer live performances of "Barney the Dinosaur" but I never said that. They filed their complaint and summons for this matter March 3, 1998, which is over 3 years from the alleged infringing comment. Isn't that too late to take action? Thanks for your help! (I am defending myself--I don't have any money for a Lawyer. I have looked into it and can't find anyone who will touch this for less than 10 grand.)
