There is nothing to stop you from doing it yourself. Even if you read the statute and the rules there would still be things that you wouldn't know or understand.

In fact lawyers are not all knowing. If life and the law were that simple there wouldn't be any need for lawyers.

The first thing that you may not be aware of is that if you use or divulge your idea before the first patent application is filed, no valid patent can issue in almost every other country in the world except the US and even here secrecy is adviseable.

There are things that can be done with and without patents.

There are provisions for on line filing. To do this you have to know what you are doing. The law is very subtle.

There is also a $100M a year scam where inventors are induced to file patent application. One in 10,000 makes more than they pay.

In the room that you are in the polarized electic plug that has two blades of equal width and a fat end an a pinched end was worked on by me and the patent has my name on it as attorney. That patent was on the Official 200th Anniversary Poster of the Patent Statute.

We start with a "Reality Check" to save time worry and money.
