New Idea

I know nothing about IP laws but I have a new business idea which
I would like to pursue. It is not something I can venture into
alone. Eventually I will need to convince some existing company (or
companies) to work with me. Of course it is an economically attractive
idea, (at least I think so).

What is the first thing I should do? And the second, and the third...?
Do I need to see lawyer or could I get a trademark
(or a patent) on line?
