Often I wish I would have pursued an MS or BS in electrical engineering (Chemical engineering is also ok). The problem isn't that I can't do the patents in electrical arts, its just that you have a hard time selling yourself as more capable, than those with an electrical degree. And let's just face it, how many civil engineers are pursuing patents? I have seen 1 in 5 years. I was able to get great jobs, but I want to say it was mostly due to the MS from Stanford. Even if you do get the job, you will get the distinct impression that a degree in civil engineering is difficult to sell to clients, employers, coworkers, etc. so... go get a degree in EE at a top tier school first. Then go to law school. : I have a question about relevant technical experience if I want to go to law school and pursue a career in patent law. I graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS in civil engineering and have had a year of work experience since. Is my civil engineering degree adequate/beneficial or does it just matter that I have any engineering degree( first 2 years, at least at Virginia Tech were the same for all engineers)? Any comments from anybody in the field would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
