Agent v. attorney...difference?

All:
This is a dumb question but what is the main difference between a patent agent and patent attorney? I know the patent attorney has to pass a state bar and go through law school in addition to going through the USPTO bar.

Also, is doing the patent agent path a good lead in to becoming a patent attorney. What does an agent make in comparison to his attorney counterpart? Thanks.
