: Hi,

: I have met a few patent attorneys and feel that they can be trusted with intellectual property. My question is can the PTO be trusted. How do they control people at the pto from keeping intellectuall property confidential. I hear that they have many foriegners working at the pto. What would stop one of them from sharing info with someone in another country.

well, here's the problem, once you file with the pto, your application will be published regardless as a "pre-grant publication" and thusly enters the public domain like it or not. This has been done to prevent so called "submarine patents". There is nothing to worry about. The only stuff that is confidential is the communcations between an applicant and the examiner.
