: I've never heard of such a thing with respect to patents, especially since to get a patent it must go through the "approval" process at the USPTO (assuming you are in the U.S.) If you mail it to yourself, how would you ever get a patent number? And furthermore, how can a patent be pending when it's not even in front of the USPTO?

: I believe you are thinking about the old way to get around registering for a copyright, which doesn't really matter anymore anyway since you no longer have to regiser to get a copyright. Copyrights and patents aren't the same thing.

: : i know you can mail yourself a patent and have patent pending i just dont know what detail or important stuff has to be mailed to myself. does such a thing still around and if so is it legal? and what exactly do i do? please help the world must have what i can give thanks maggie

Dear Sprink,
What is important is to establish admissible proof of conception.
I had a clever client that sent the proof of conception to a friend, certified. He then obtained the unopended letter.

This had double value. It was admissible in court and also was not a "divulgation" to jeopardize international rights.
