I know of people who took the patent bar and started out doing patent prosecution work, and then later their law firms sent them to law school so they could be patent attorneys. I also know of law firms who employ people who are only patent agents, and they do solely prosecution work. I guess it depends what you want to do. Do you want to be a patent agent or a patent attorney, or both? If you want to be a patent attorney, you can try the route of starting out doing patent agent work and hope your law firm will send you to law school, or you could just go straight to law school and then get a job as a patent attorney. (And take the patent bar while in school so you can do patent agent work as well.) The PLI prep course is fabulous, by the way.
