You might want to consider doing a patent
search to see what is out there already. The
USPTO and IBM have websites where you can do
keyword searching for free. This may help to give
you some perspective.

If you are in the DC area, you can also go to the
USPTO to do a manual search. This may be good if
your invention is difficult to keyword search.
