Hope this helps.

: 1) Could you describe the type of work that a patent agent does?

A patent agent typically drafts patent applications and interacts with the US Patent Office to obtain an issued patent. Sometimes, the agent may be involved with opinions about the validity or infringement of a patent.

: 2) Does the growth outlook for this field look promising for the long term?

Tough question, considering the economy now. I would say yes, an agent's future is promising IF the agent has very good technical skills that are in demand. Also, agents are (usually) cheaper than attorneys.

: 3) What would be a good way to get into the patent agent line of work?

Usually law firms are a good route. Your present employer or a company in your field of expertise may also be a good lead.

: 4) Do you know what a typical salary would be for an experienced person entering the patent agent field would be?

Depends on what the experience is and in what field. I know of one agent who is being paid around 60K after having several years of technical experience. Large law firms and certain geographical areas will definitely pay more.

: 5) Is it true that a patent agent can take the bar exam for a state without having a law degree?

The Federal Gov't, through the US Patent Office, regulates patent agents and attorneys. The Separation of Powers clause in the Fed Constitution gives each state the right to regulate its respective bar. As far as I know, there is no state in the union that will allow this. Think of this way: a state bar is admissable by those who have demonstrated some competence in that state's laws. However, a patent agent is trained in Federal patent law. There is no overlap.
