I have a PhD in chemistry with an extensive background in synthetic (organic and inorganic) and materials chemistry. I have worked for 1.5 yrs in a foreign national lab, two yrs as a post-doctoral researcher at MIT and nearly two years in my current position in industry. I have recently passed the Oct patent bar (via home study) and have begun to assist our in-house council on a part-time basis. I really enjoy ip law and want to find a place where I can learn it full-time. Should I go through a search firm or apply directly on my own? I have heard many horror stories about search firms thus I am apprehensive about going this route. I am willing to work at any firm or company which will give me a start in the field, pay a reasonable salary and give me the opportunity to attend evening law school. Where do I have a better chance to land a job: company ip dept or ip law firm? : Please help! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! : A Dear A, From what you say my instincts say that you should start from what you want for youself, then shop around. Search Firms may or may not be alright for you. They specialize in getting the jobs. They live on the fees for the jobs they place. As I understand it, they get paid for placement. With the patent bar behind you and the skills you say you have cold calls may get you interviews or a job. No matter what you will have to adapt to the routine. Even the law field is shrinking a bit now but your specialized skills may be in big demand. Good luck, M. Arthur Auslander Auslander & Thomas-Intellectual Property Law Since 1909
