: : Judging by your message, you believe a provisional patent application is important for an invention. That translates to you believing you can make money from the invention. That’s great! However, I STRONGLY recommend trying to find a patent attorney or agent who will not charge a lot and/or will provide you with a payment arrangement.

: : That being said, the US Patent Office has a blurb about provisionals. Also check out the Patent Café. Many bookstores also have books about do-it-yourself patents.

: : Best of luck.

: Dear Dave,

: I responded before reading your reply. What can be added is that even a book on do it yourself patents, does not help one to be able to draft patent claims that give the protection that you need.

: What is more such protection is often not available even in a issued patent solicited by a concerned Registered Patent Lawyer.

: It is a tough business to make money with ideas. It can be done. It is also easy to spend large amounts of money and even get patent which can legitimately be avoided.

: I fight with our Reality Check® to save clients money, time and worry.

Thank you all for your responses, but I was looking for steps or a process for filing a provisional patent application. That was exactly what I wanted. I will continue to do research because I do know you can file a provisional patent application yourself without an attorney or agent. I understand that its for only 12 months and you have to file a complete patent or abandon it within those 12 months.I know it is suggested you get an agent or attorney, but what if your invention doesn't do well or make it? Then wouldn't we have lost thousands of dollars for nothing. Right! We'd rather lose a little than a lot that we don't have. I'm not down playing our invention, just wondering the what if's. I was hoping to get more from your forum.
