: I am an engineer, no longer employed by a company which has contacted me demanding I assign all rights/power of attorney back to them regarding a patent which I was jointly granted during my employment. Must I assign these rights? The patent has indications of becoming extremely lucrative and I wish to be compensated prior to my assignment. What are my rights? Dear Mr. Blackburn, It is my belief that if you signed an agreement, they you are stuck. If you did not, they the courts may have to decide. If you were employed to invent, the odd would seem against you. You do need an competant IP attorney to go over the details to see what can be done. M.
