: : I have a friend who would like to file a paten for an invention and we don't have the faintest idea on how to do it. I guess I need to know where to go and what to do. He lives in michigan and I live in Florida. Is there a local place that may be where I need to go. Like the courthouse or secretary of state?

: Patents can only be obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, DC. They have, of course, forms and procedures for submitting a patent application. They can be pretty complicated, so you should check with a patent agent or patent attorney for assistance. The Patent and Trademark Office has a list of licensed agents and attorneys. The big question, however, is whether you can patent a new breed of dog. A patent can only be issued for a "process, machine, manufacture or composition of matter." Your patent attorney will have to check whether a new breed fits into one of these four patentable subject matters.

Dear Mr. Giblin,

Not every good idea is patentable and not every patent is going to give the protection that you need. Registered patent lawyers can be used in any part of the country.

There are agencies engaged in a $100M+ a year getting patents. One in 10k make more than they pay.

Dear Sir,
A friend of mine clued me into the Shubrick on the web where I found your request for people who served on the Shubrick.

In the middle May of '45 at Okinawa I was assigned to the Shubrick as part of the Radar Fighter picket team. The Shubrck was assigned to its second picket mission. I was not out on its first picket duty. I was in the CIC watching the radar when we got hit. There was no fighter direction to do at night so I watch the radar as saw, what I believed then to be a single Kamikaze, as I saw it on the radar.

Not being ships company aftet the his I had no battle station. I could hear the magazine cracking. I now seem to remember the secondary explosion of the Depth charge. I watched from the Bridge and saw one of the officer run out on deck. The come back with a schrapnel would in the neck.

After the war I went on to Harvard law school where I met Loeffler one of twins at the school. I could identify the one from the Shubrick by the scar on his neck.

I was one of the "unnecessary personnel" that took the order to climb over to the Van Falkenburg. An APD arrived from Yellow Beach 2 and took us back to Okinawa. I was soon reassigned to the Flag Ship Curtiss at Kerama Rhetto.

My friends on the Porter replaced me on the Curtiss. That was the only capitol ship sinking during the war without a death.

I went back to picket duty on the Watt and the Aulick as I recall without further event. My room on the Curtis was blown up within 48 hours of leaving the ship.

Somewhere during this period I saw the Shubrick tied up, possibly at Kerama Rhetto, I could see that there was still at least one body in the gaping engine room.
