: Can you violate patents indirectly? For example, suppose
: I wrote a technical book that explained in detail how
: a patented device works (basically summarizing the patent),
: would this be infringeing on the patent since I'm indirectly
: making money off the patent? In a related question, are
: the drawings on patents copyrighted? Or can I freely use
: them in a book?

: Also, is it infringement to build a copy of a patented
: device in your own shop for your own personal use? (it's not
: being sold to anyone--just being used by yourself). Does
: it matter that this personal use may involve using the
: device as a tool in the person's job? Thanks.

Dear Patricia,

Without taking professinal responsibility for this answer:

You can write the book. There is no copyright on the drawings.

Making using or selling in infringement.

Dear Vanessa,
Please give us a call. We charge $250 for the Reality Check (sm) but not for the call. Even legitimate Patent Lawyers can say yes without lying and get you a patent. What you need is value. We start with the Reality Check (sm). Even if we know that we can get a patent for you we do not necessarily recommend even a patent search. We answer all questions and don't mind being challenged.
If we do a patent search you get a credit for the $250 against the search. Not long ago a client came in with a patent that was obtained from a legitimate Registered Patent Practitioner, The patent may have been valid but it gave away the farm and was unenforceable. The patent cost many K.
In the room that you are in if you pull a plug out of the wall and it has two blades of equal width one with a fat end and one with a pinched end, not only did we patent that but it was on the Official PTO commemorative poster for the 200th Anniversary of the Patent Statute.
