You listed two issue dates by the other inventors -
January 2000 and 1997. IF you mean that the ISSUE
date is in 2000 and the FILING date was in 1997
then you MIGHT have a slim chance to still obtain
a patent, but you need to act fast!

You need to examine "bar" dates under 35 U.S.C.
102(a) and 102(b) and examine whether you were
diligent in your efforts up to the point of filing
a patent application. Please seek legal advice.

From you brief notes, it doesn't look promising.
