: I am an attorney in Houston, Texas.

: I personally have an design idea. The best example that I can give is: My idea is similar to the idea of moving the stering wheel from the left to the right side of a car. The product that I am wanting to redesign is almost as recognizable as an automobile and will be as common as a microwave oven within five years or less. I only want to redesign a part of it; like moving the stering wheel.

: Questions.

: 1) How can I protect the design idea from the attorney or agent I employ to help me?
: 2) After the design idea is givin to the attorney, what are the first steps he takes in proceeding?
: 3) What are the costs associated with each step?
: 4) How long does it take to do a design search?
: 5) When a person submits a design for something similar to a car, is it typical for them to submit alternate designs with the orginal application?
: 6) What extra steps are required to protect the patent worldwide.

Dear John,
There are scams with regard to patents, there are practicioners who will encourage patent filings despite the lack of value of the invention-----but I have NEVER heard of even the scam artists stealing and idea.

Dealing with a Patent Lawyer their are ethical codes of both the Patent Office and the legal athority that administers the lawyers practice.
The disclosure is in conficence.

Since not every good idea is patentable and not every patent give the protection the inventor needs, we start with a Reality Check (sm) to save time, money and worry.

Patents are not inexpensive.

Keep the invention secret until you dislcose to a Patent lawyer.
