My idea, however, is to take these components purchased from company "X" and modify them to fit my design. The components are electronic and are packaged in their unique format. My intent is to take their electronics and put them in a package of my design. Is this a legal method for creating a patentable device? Dear Mr.Wolfe, What you said sounds like the possibility of patentability. It also raises side questions as to where you stand with existing patents and what can be done to avoid problems. A Reality Check (sm) would put the situation in a more workable perspective. For instance it might be possible to get a patent and find that you can't get the components. There there is always the question of whether the patent claims you MAY be able to get will serve your needs. M. Arthur Auslander
