: I have a product that I've designed and built and wish to take to a manufacturer. For the sake of argument, let's say it's a dog house. The design is very unique and while the method of construction is somewhat original I don't believe there are any patent rights that would apply. I believe I could get a design copyright but am not sure how much protection that would provide me. Could you please advise on the best way to protect myself ? : Frank Dear Mr. Papaleo, The ugly truth is that whatever protection that you can get is generally specific. Thus it may be easy to duplicate the idea without copying what you have protected. One approach would be to get confidentiality agreements signed before disclsoure. The trick is to get them signed. The bigger the company you go to the less likely they are to buy. I had one client that consulted for a huge corporation and was very close to the president of one of the sub corporations. He was able to make a confidenial disclosure. Throughout corporate general counsel kept fighting to stop the disclosure. The irony of it all was that the product hit the shelves and was a failure. M.
