: A buddy of mine has bought a few copies of a DVD from a Canadian web-site, and is selling these on E-Bay for a reasonable profit since the DVD isn't widely available in the USA. He's now recieved notice of an impending cease-and-desist order from a guy claiming to own the US distribution rights for the movie. Since my buddy has acquired these non-bootleg DVDs from a legit source in Canada, does this guy have any recourse against him? Surely they are his property and he can do with them as he wishes?
Physical ownership has nothing to do with owning the Intellectual Property rights. The consquences of Copyright infringments can be severe.
