photocopying pages of a book as handouts

Hi, is it fair use if I photocopy some pages of a book for class handout when teaching? Thank you. - Alan

It depends.  Factors that are taken into consideration include whether it is for commercial or non-profit use, the amount of the work you are copying, the degree of harm done to the author by your copying, etc.

To minimize the risks of copyright violation, many educational institutions have established specific guidelines for faculty.  Check to see if your school has such guidelines.  If not, you cna do a web search to find guidelines from other schools, such as:
