Patent Counsel

Are you looking to develop your career as a Patent Counsel with hands-on exposure to the technology and an ability to influence patent strategies? We currently have a vacancy for a Patent Counsel at our site in Farnborough

As a Patent Counsel, you will be effectively engaging with the business unit to capture inventions, draft and prosecute patent applications, assist with the management of that business unit's patent portfolio in accordance with its technology strategy.

This role will conduct opinion work, and police and enforce the patent portfolio, in accordance with the Group's patent policies and procedures.

Your main responsibilities as a Patent Counsel will involve:

Managing the business unit's patent portfolio, including management of the drafting and prosecution of patent applications arising from the business

Promoting IP awareness within the business, and particularly amongst those in the business responsible for research and development work

Supporting the Head of Patents in achieving an appropriate patent application filing rate in key technology areas to enhance the strategic focus of the business' patent portfolio

Implementing IP policies within the business, in particular policies relevant to patenting activity

Building effective relationships at all levels within the business so as to become an integral and essential part of the business' value proposition

Working closely with IP Commercial team, leveraging their expertise to provide complete IP solutions that deliver maximum value to the business


Your skills and qualifications as a Patent Counsel will ideally include:

Experience of both UK and foreign patent work – harvesting inventions, filing, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and preferably including matters of a contentious nature

Possess a good technical degree or equivalent, and demonstrate technical skill in areas relevant to the business unit (Aerodynamic, Mechanical or Electronics Engineering, or Physics)

Demonstrate commercial awareness of the value of patenting to the business, and be able to enthusiastically communicate this awareness at all levels in the business

Experienced at interacting directly with clients   (internal clients or practice clients), in particular with inventors and business management stakeholders to understand the technology and how this fits with the business plan (people owning the patents)

Experience of interacting directly with Clients (internal clients or practice clients), inventors and business managers would be desirable

Being a fully-qualified European Patent Attorney and/or Chartered Patent Attorney would be desirable; ideally with one to two years PQE although nearly-qualified with suitable experience will be considered.
