Patent management software for small company
« on: 04-09-15 at 12:31 pm »

Hello,

I'm in-house at a small company with a significant and growing patent portfolio.  We are looking for software to help us manage this process with features like:
  • Allowing inventors to submit invention ideas and see status
  • Get status of all patent assets
  • To do list -- Eg, patents that need to be filed or OAs that need a response
  • Syncing with PAIR or other patent databases

I'm currently looking at IPFolio, Anaqua, and Lecorpio.

Please let me know if you recommend any of these or others.

thank you,
Jeff

I thought I'd answer my own question in case this helps others in the future.

I ended up going with AppColl because it had the lowest pricing.  It works ok, but the UI is slow and not that intuitive.  If your client is not cost sensitive, I would try something else.

IPFolio was my second choice and they also had pretty good pricing.  I wasn't crazy about the fact that it is so tightly tied to Salesforce and that you need a Salesforce login.  Though if I could do it again, I would probably choose them over AppColl because it seems like a better product.

I use a cloud/web based app developed by a former co-worker. It works well enough and it is free (for the time being)!

Can you share any more info?  Would be nice to hear more about this tool.

Back when I was in-house we would actually utilize our outside counsel for docketing (we did all prosecution in-house but maintained a relationship for litigation) and simply set up internal policies and procedures (policy guides, inventions submission forms, etc.) for the internal portion of the process. OC didn't seem to mind since it made them our default choice for litigation and overflow work, and it cost us nothing extra except for maybe occasional reporting fees. We could also then easily decide if we wanted them to take care of certain admin tasks for us such as maintenance fees, etc. for a reasonable charge.

For my outside work, I tried AppCol and agree with your assessment that the UI is not very endearing. Did not renew for that reason.
