Bottoming out as a second year - what can I do afterwards?

That's exactly right.  In better times, this isn't so bad... when a case settles you can just take an extended, guilt-free, multi-week vacation without worrying about any prosecution docket (remember I've worked both sides of the force).  Guilt-free because you've generally banked enough hours during a trial to carry you for a month or so and you know that, before too long, you'll be swept up again in another all-consuming, 24-7 misadventure.  When lit is down, however, everybody spends the downtime scrambling to do pro bono, write client alerts, and offering to hand wash any partner's car.  It's scary when you know your next meal might not come for three months.
