The European Commission published a proposal for new regulations on the protection of geographical indications in Europe.
A currently protection is divided into three segments - PDO, PGI and TSG.
The aim of the new regulation is to unite the three segments into one, thereby facilitating the protection of geographical indications in Europe which registration at the time it takes considerable time in the presence of a complex bureaucratic procedure.
It is expected that the EC proposal to be put into effect in 2012 after passing the approval of the Council of Europe and European Parliament.
Text of the proposal can be found here.

This is a very nice provision we see very little of in the US.  Geographic indication doesn't seem to play into our marketing so much.  It sure does in Europe.

Here in Europe Geographical indications are especially appreciated. There are specific products which have been produced for centuries. According to most people these products, unless produced in an original way, have excellent quality too. It is the quality and originality that are used in the marketing of these products, which gives certain advantages.

It is very important not only for Europe but also for other countries. I think the proposal would be approved by the European council.
Every country have to take same protection for their geographical indications.
