Becoming a Patent Agent/Lawyer / Re: Apartment
« on: 08-27-10 at 12:52 pm »
For those that have recently located or know the area around the PTO, I am seeking a 1/1 apartment either near the Huntington Metro or somewhere in north west Alexandria off Duke Street near a bus line or King Street.

FWIW, there is a brand new apartment building that literally across the street from the Huntington Metro. I don't know what it's like on the inside.

Maybe drop me a private message if you move into the Huntington area. I'm living right down the street.

Dolphins are not fish. When a spambot acts as its own lexicographer in redefining the meaning of particular claim terms away from their ordinary meaning, it must clearly express that intent in the written description.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure they won't ask for OF-306 forms unless they're serious about hiring you, so hang in there.

FWIW, there's a brand new apartment complex right across the street from the Huntington Metro. I personally don't think the area is as bad as everyone else seems to -- certainly it's much better than SE DC imho.

what kind of bonuses are available once you start?  i am taking close to 50% pay cut so i would like to find out what my financial compensation can be for the next year or two.

How is it you managed to get through the hiring process without finding out what your compensation/benefits would be? Anyway, the compensation will differ form year to year, so you're better off getting this info from the PTO. They've either sent this info out already, or they will send  it to you, or you'll have a chance to find out all about stuff like this on your start date, where you'll have plenty of opportunities to talk to the HR people.

If you have a good SPE this job is so damn easy.
I do wonder what art units most of you who have trouble are in.

Sounds like you are in one of those easy art units, such as that deals with toiletry.

I'm in a fairly tough art unit, and I've also had a fairly easy time with it. Got promoted to GS11 within a year, never had to work voluntary overtime. I think it all just depends on your training and your SPE.

Is that done before I start or afterward?  Is there a chance that I might have a problem given that I don't have any criminal record or anything like that.

Dude, don't stress out about it. Follow the directions they give you, and you'll be fine. You can have the fingerprinting done at your local police station beforehand for a nominal fee.

I would avoid Huntington at all costs.

I've been living near the Huntington Metro, and it's worked out well for me. Cheap, quiet, and 30 min from door-to-door. Not much to do nearby, though.

The USPTO has an on-site daycare center.
This is misleading.

While there IS a daycare center the enrollment is perpetually "full"

I called them in January 2010 and they said they were already full for the entire year...

Good luck finding an opening

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Sorry about the confusion.

I might have missed it  before, but could you tell me about your own career path?  It sounds like you've had an interesting one.

I too am curious to know what your current, general line of work is, hc.

I don't exactly know why things have evolved this way.  My sense is that it's tied to the over-production of PhDs in the biological sciences.  However, it may also be true that much of the work being done by these people necessitates a PhD.

Not just bio these days. Pretty much all the physcial sciences are experiencing an oversupply of Ph.D. students and a lack of traditional research jobs.

I already see new names (via employee #s) in the employee directory. Most all of them are patent attorneys or agents and are on the second floor of the Madison building for training.

don't they do the training in the basement of Randolph, jefferson, etc?

Nope. These day's it's the Madison building.

Can you accept the position and then rescind? If so, what are the drawbacks to doing that in the long term?

You can quit when ever you like afaik. You can't start at 11 and drop down to 9 if the work gets too overwhelming, if that's your question.
