I think it would be helpful for some people to share their experiences at the Patent Training Academy.

I'll throw my 2 cents in later on, I just wanted to throw the idea out there before I forgot.

Anyone want to comment on the advantages/disadvantages of Arlington?

I'd like to be closer to DC, but not necessarily right in DC, and I don't mind a little bit of a commute to the Patent Office. Arlington seems like it would right in between. Any opinions?

Just started working at the USPTO and moved to Arlington (Ballston Metro stop specifically).

I think it (Arlington in general) is a great area.   A lot of young professionals around and lots to do.

The commute to work is a bit on the longer side, but riding the Metro isnt to bad.

If you have any specific questions feel free to lay them out here and I will do my best to answer them so others who may have the same questions can take a look.

Just attended a little lecture today given by the Commissioner of Patents who was essentially welcoming some of the recent hires.

Of interest to those reading this thread he said they were (cant remember the exact numbers) around 90 people being hired for the December class and about 250! people being hired for the January class.

Law school sucks.

When my friends used to ask me about law school, this was my typical response...

"Law school is all the negatives of undergraduate multiplied with none of the undergraduate benefits."

I had my interview last week for 1600 as well, and they told me the same thing about this CR business.  Isn't Congress out of session until after the mid-term elections?  So does that mean there won't be an Oct. 25 class?

I am signed up for the Oct 25th class and haven't received any word of the Oct 25 not occurring.

So exactly where has everyone been looking at?

I took out a trip out to DC this weekend, and rode the orange line metro from Ballston, as far out as I realistically want to live, over to the Blue line and down to King.

Can any of you locals recommend apartments to look at?  I'm basically looking for a two bedroom apartment, willing to pay at most $2400 a month, nearish to the orange metro line anywhere between Ballston and Roslyn.

I wouldnt mind up to a 15 minute walk to get to the metro, but thats about it.

Suggestions?

What reason would a SPE have for not allowing you to work overtime if it is unpaid?  Not trying to be argumentative, just curious.

did they say anything about congressional funding, so take the 9/27 academy date or whatever

What?

Just wanted to update my hiring journey.  Was called this afternoon and offered a position at the GS 9 step 8 level, no other option given.  They wanted me to start on September 27, however I deferred to the Oct 25 date.

my question is that your highest possible pay, so there is no potential to move from gs-15 step1 to gs-15 step3?  I am completly uneducated in how the pay scale system works.

What is the question?  I tried to figure out what you're attempting to ask but that is completely unintelligible.

At least for the GS-7/9 level - four months

jeez now im starting to get worried.

did you guys have previous IP experience as was required for the GS/11 positions?

any key words or phrases that seem to point to getting hired or not getting hired?

I wasnt able to read the interviewer very well.  It was over the phone, so reading body language was out.  However she seemed to respond favorably to my answers.

Regarding experience, I would think those that were interviewed must have had the necessary experience, otherwise why would they be getting interviewed?

I wouldnt worry to much about people not being hired for the GS-11/9 position they had open a while back.  From my understanding they had A LOT of applicants and ended up hiring a relatively small number of these applicants.

had my phone interview. thought it went fairly well. the spe said I  should hear back within two weeks. anyone ever get rejected from a job at this point?
d youiss

When I had previously applied to the GS9/11 position I had a phone interview that I also thought went fairly well, but was rejected in the end.

Not trying to dash your hopes, just want to give an honest answer.

did you interview with the spe? if so, can you describe what the interview was like

Just the same questions that I was asked when I interviewed for the GS-7/9 position... Tell me about a time you received critical feedback.  How did you react to the feedback and what did you do about the feedback"  or "Tell me about a time where you were given a challenging deadline.  How did you go about meeting this deadline and what was the final result?" and also "Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer or client.  How did you go about dealing with this person and what was the outcome"?
