Becoming a Patent Agent/Lawyer / Entry Level jobs for Agents

Hello guys,
I am planning on finishing my PhD in organic chemistry at the end of this summer, and desperately looking for a way to get a job working with IP. I applied for an examiner position when the USPTO posted positions in chemistry in December, but no luck (at least not yet, I have officially been not selected for GS-7, but my GS-9 application is still in limbo, but I assume it is just a matter of time until that one is not selected, since I haven't even been contacted for an interview).
I'm thinking of preparing to take the patent bar and trying to find work as an agent, but from what I have read in this forum, I get the impression that entry level agent jobs for people with no experience in patents are nonexistent these days. Is this impression accurate? Should I try this route, or would taking the patent bar just be a waste of my time and money?
Thanks!
