Inspired by our spam-heavy Saturday today, I went over to look for available anti-spam mods for this forum software.

Bad Behavior mod
It pretty much does the type of analysis I was thinking of and more, including checking things like a proper proxy server.

Stop Forum Spam
This one leverages from a site for distributed spam detection: http://www.stopforumspam.com/ And, guess who's listed there. seosoftware (http://www.stopforumspam.com/search/?q=seosoftware), the guy whose 54 messages I spent about 5-10 min. deleting one at a time a few minutes ago!
Both of those mods will require an upgrade of the forum software.
Best best is to just turn off new subscribers for now.

Hey, during the outage here, I poked around a bit at the .net doppelganger for this site. It was awash in spam. I thought it would be a good test bed for anti-spam measures. In fact, I posted that there and had a spam reply within a few hours!
Anyone know who set that up?

Just noticed this post. I set uip the .net site. Took it down after it became (unbeknownst to me) haven for child porn of all things.
Spam for shoes I can handle. That stuff? No way.
The sapam is quickly going to kill this site too if the owner down't do something.

I don't get it -- is this SMF forum software itself particularly vulnerable? I've never seen any other forum so badly attacked. IIRC, the .net site that Klav put up was likewise using SMF, and started to get flooded within the first couple of days.
phpBB seemed to work all right -- looks like that's what Robert is using, although I didn't recognize it at first (newer version than what the last forum I admin'ed uses).
In my opinon for new members less than 50 posts
1. should restricted to one post without hyper linking in 24 hours.
2. should not be allowed to create new thread, instead they can ask questions in one sticky post tagged as "Question and Answers"
3. forum should also have a feature if a moderator or lead member bann a user all post should get deleted.

I'm a member of an online community/forum. What that forum does to combat spam is simple in my opinion. Before any new member can gain full access to most part of the forum they have to post four times throughout the forum. The posts have to be relevant and they are allowed to post in one sub-forum per day.
For instance, on Day 1, I post in the Introduction section and introduce myself.
Day 2, I post a recipe in the Breakfast Recipes.
Day 3, I post in the Health Research.
Day 4, I post in the Movie Spoilers.
But what I noticed is that forum is more heavily patrolled by admins, who aren't afraid to use the banhammer on people who are breaking the rules or spamming.
Maybe more admins will circumvent this problem.

I think most of that is already done here. The big difference is the mod that I really like, Stop Forum Spam. I've discussed this with the owner/administrator here and I believe that mod will be included after the upgrade that's currently in the works.

I was just wondering if the moderators had noticed that there seem to be quite a number of spam accounts which have registered lately. Is there any reason why these are kept around, rather than just banned?
