What constitutes a CMI?

Hi
Here is a simple question.
I am reading up about how people try to avoid infringement cases and that they site 'fair use' all the time.
Now, in my research I found that if an image contains a CMI (Copyright Management Information) and it is removed, then that excuse of Fair Use is out the window and also they are liable for greater damages.
Can I ask if the image is a digital painting and contains a monogram (unique to the artist) and/or a signature, does that constitute a CMI?

Thanks in advance

Rob
