I have a friend that wants to copyright her lyrics. How do you copyright lyrics that don't (yet) have music with them?

Lyrics without music is essential a poem.  Write it down and
it is protected by copyright.  You can register it like an other
literary work, but like all works, lyrics are protected as
soon as they are fixed in a tangible medium of expression.

Would it be considered infringement if I used a copyrighted melody to which I created new and original lyrics?  How would I copyright my lyrics?

Like Mr. Clark said, you can register your lyrics as a poem.  Performing or distributing recordings of your lyrics sung over the copyrighted melody would most likely be an infringement of the melody's copyright.  It seems to be a derivative work at least.

Regards.
