After passing patent bar
« on: 05-04-08 at 09:34 pm »

hello all,

thought i'd start a new topic for discussion among those recently passing the exam to share experience - registration process to other general concrens that relate to registration and practice.

for example, there's scattered questions deep in the thread about what forms of payments are acceptable, how long it takes to get registration number, etc - would be helpful to have all this info in one place i thought.

btw - anyone wondering about the forms of payment for $100 registration fee, cfr1.23 has a list (includes certified check, cashiers check, us postal money order, etc)

congrats to everyone who passed; good luck to those who are still preparing.

Good questions and good thread -- what does happen next?  will it all be clear in the letter from the USPTO? (its website is less than clear)

Hi everyone, now that we passed.  Next, we need to find a job.  Any expert can give us some advices on what the employers out there looking for on resume.  It seems most of the positions require 2-3 years experience on prosecution or writing application.  For a rookie agent with no law experience, would corporation be harder to get in than lP law firm?  What are the difference between working at coporation and law firm?  Appreciate on any advice on job searching.

Thanks.

to me, the pto letter seemed clear enough - you fill in the data sheet and sign the oath in front of a notary and submit.  i think you also have a good shot just calling up OED at PTO and asking specific questions (be sure to mention though if you call that you have already looked at the website and still had some questions - this way they dont get annoyed with your phone call and hopefully in time they will get the hint the website can be made a little more accessible for info)

what woul be helpful too is if anyone with info on good resources for job search can help us by starting a listing here - websites that list patent attny jobs, associations which give advice on finding work as patent attorney/agent, services which list IP firms, etc...

thanks all for your help - hopefully we'll all land great jobs and in time can give back...

nypatentlaw,

I haven't got the PTO letter, so I'm glad to hear all will be clear once I do. (The web site is a real PITA.) When should I expect the letter?

Could anyone share their experience with how long after they mail the $100 registration fee, data sheet and oath it takes before their name is posted for public comments?

Not sure if there is any order to the posting dates - for example there appear to be two postings in one day, some postings about a few days or a week apart, and then there are some where more than 2 or 3 weeks before the next posting.

bottom line is, i recently passed, and my name is not on the most recent posting - i dont really know which date to look for; the most recent posting date is may 5th, but on the list of names there is a date of April 29 at the end, so I assume that listing was prepared on April 29 and posted on May 5, but which date is the 45 day counted from and also approx. how many days from passing or submission of oath/data sheet before name posted?

any information appreciated.

I passed the first week of march.  I was on the list by the end of march and had my certificate in hand by early may.

hope that helps.

thanks - helpful; it seems from the mpep the "posting" should happen right after passing the exam but unclear if that happens of if time is counted from receiving and processing of datasheet and oath.
