Patent? Improvement on Existing Item.
« on: 12-28-07 at 06:38 am »

Hi

I have figured out a way to improve an existing product, making it easier to use.  The item is due to take front stage due to Global Warming and Environmental Concerns.  The product has a basic design, but each company that distributes it adds their own name to the item

The improvements I have made make the item easier for clerks to do their job in a timely manner.

My question is should I try and file a patent on Improving an existing item, claiming a Utility Patent?

Or should I try to market the idea to the distributors of the item, knowing it will improve the sale of this item?  I also know that soon this item will be the only thing that we in California and many other states can use.

I would like to get a little compensation for this Idea.  I have tested it and results were amazing.  The fix will add may be 2 or 3 minutes to the original production time.

If any one can tell me what direction to take, I would greatly appreciate it.  I have sent in an Invention Disclosure form in on it.

Sincerely, Rocks

Wiscagent

"... should I try and file a patent ... Or should I try to market the idea"

These are not mutually exclusive activities.  Since you are convinced that you have such a worthwhile idea, you should probably contact a patent agent or patent attorney and get a better understanding of the potential costs and benefits of filing a patent application.

To whom did you send in an invention disclosure?

I sent the Invention Disclosure to the

Document Disclosure Program
U.S. Patent & Trademark Office
Washington,  DC  20231

Along with the document, I sent a cover letter, some pictures.  the witnessed Invention Disclosure and $10.00  along with stamped return receipt postcard.  All this information I got from "Patents for Beginners."  I also sent myself a copy of the same thing sent to the Patent Office, to myself, which I will not open.

My whole idea is so simple, that I am shocked no one else has thought about it.

Thank you for your input.

Roxanne:

Disclosure document program was eliminated effective Feb 1, 2007.

You may want to file a PPA instead.
