Original Story Material?
« on: 08-23-04 at 07:38 am »

Hello,

I have a question regarding the use of popular myth/legend as a basis for "original" material. In short, I would like to base two scripts for a comic book on Grimm's fairy tale "Snow White" and another on Hindi legend (based on a story in Sanskrit) Not direct interpretations but using a style of my own.

Am I violating any copywright laws by doing this and if so, how may I obtain rights to such material?

The original version of Grimm's fairy tales are certainly
public domain.  But those are not the versions kids are
familiar with.  The current versions are sanitized a bit to
tone down the violence and not for kids imagery of the
originals.  Derive from the original work without copying
someone's protected interpretation and you should be fine.
