USPTO: Overtime
« on: 09-27-07 at 06:12 pm »

Ive been working in the acadmeny for about a while now and Im finally going to be eligible for OT.  I can't EVER seem to get a straight answer however, and OT pay isn't any different.. it always seem to vary with source/person.

The way I understand it the OT is 1.5 times a GS 10 Step 1, or your own pay times 1.5... whichever is less.  Is this true?  If so I'm glad they picked a GS level that doesnt' exist at the UPO (just average a GS9 and GS11?).

While Im at it I have another question about promotion... I had an understanding that for a promotion you go to the next highest pay than your current pay on the next GS level and go 2 steps to the right (lucky me I tumble about 5 steps).

I have heard another person mention that you go to the next GS level, and then over to the left 2 (this would be MUCH better).

I fear the first way is the truth but I'd like to hear it from someone else.  Thanks ???

If 1.5 times your base rate is less than 36.44, then your OT rate is 1.5 times your base rate. If 1.5 times your base rate is greater than 36.44 and your base rate is less than 36.44, then your OT rate is 36.44. If your base rate is higher than 36.44, then your OT rate is your base rate.

Promotions are generally next grade minus three steps.

mk that sounds good but not exactly right.  I can tell you as a GS7/10 I get the 1.5 rate which is about 44/hr however my friends who are GS9 only get the 36/hr rate.  Too bad I'm getting my 6 month promotion next week, its nice making more money (per hour at least) then people higher up than you.

Atleast you're not a GS5.. imagine this:  You get your "promotion" to a GS7 meaning you're doing more work.  Your pay becomes about $55,000..

With the new recruitment incentives included you are making about $12,000 less than brand new employees working at the same GS level who haven't even proven themselves yet!  Now that is a sham... they're lucky I like working there  ;D

I'm in that situation right now. And thats not even the worse part. I'm a mech-e and came in when there was no bonus. So compared to a gs7-10 new recruit mech-e who is getting 15000.

When I got promoted to gs7, I only gained 3000. When I move up again in another couple of month it would be 3000 still not made up. I would have 9000 to go which would take approx. 3 or 4 years to make up. And thats if that person remained at a gs7/10. Remember each year its a step increase, but if u get a promotion its only 2, not 2 plus another step for your year of service.

Hopefully they would have money for me to go to lawschool in a year.

Thanks PTO for leaving out my last semester of school. I earned a 3.5 for nothing that semester.

I didn't realize GS-05 and GS-07 got 1.5x, but I guess it makes sense since they're non-exempt positions (i.e. covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act).

I'm trying to do overtime now that I'm back in TC, but it's really hard to spend so much time at the PTO (I'm eligible for 32 hours/biweek). I am counting down the days until I'm eligible for a laptop.

I feel your pain PTO... also I feel like hardly anybody came in at a GS5.  I also missed the recruitment incentive.

The only way I can feel a little better about it is thinking about people who came in 2 or 3 years ago... or people in other areas on the goverment who don't get paid jack.

I want to go to law school as well.. but it sounds like that program is on the chopping block... (they have to overpay all of the new people)... sigh
