Hi!

I am going to law school this fall. Just wondering about the job market for IP right now.

Thanks

daniel,

my impression from speaking with colleagues across the globe is that the market is relatively slow for patent attorneys right now, but rather busy for litigators.

three years ago, a newly minted patent attorney would have no more trouble finding a job than a relative of the bush family.

today it may take slightly longer, but there seems to be more or less a constant demand for patent attorneys. some years it is better (like 3 years ago), some worse (like now), but almost always better than most other areas of law.

in three years time, the situation for patent attorneys could be very much different than it is today. it is clear that IP plays a significant role in the knowlede economy so unless the "knowledge wants to be free" anti-intellectual property crowd (aka open source and free software movements) have their way, things should be very good in the future.

and if the anti-property forces win the world's economies will collapse and finding a job will be the least of your worries. finding food will be.

good luck with your studies.

regards,
