My husband is a great cook and has developed his own recipes for many every day food items.  His meatballs, chicken wings, pizza and meatloaf (just to name a few of many) always draw comments from others that he should market them.  We have no idea how to go about doing this.  The first thing that came to our mind was to patent the recipes.  If this is correct, how do we do it and how much $$$ is involved?  If not, any ideas or suggestions on how to market his recipes?  We appreciate any input.  Thanks!

Dear Mrs. Burke,

It is unlikely that a patent could be obtained on a recipie. There may be aspects of what is done that may not be obvious. They can be treated as a trade secret.

A trademark on the end product can last forever. My wife has a cologne that has a 200 year old trademark on it.

I hope that your husband is very quiet and knows how to keep a secret.  After all, neither Coke nor KFC has patents on their recipes.  Coke is probably the most famous trademark in the world.  I think you get my point.  More information on the Coke story can be found at:  http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/formula.asp
