I have heard from a few vague sources that if you work for the USPTO for a certain amount of time... you can waive the patent bar.  Is this true?

Or perhaps it means one can only work as a patent agent inside the Office itself.

They do not waive the patent bar anymore.  They used to if you worked at the patent office before a certain date, for 4 years, and the director's approval.  It is in the MPEP somewhere that they do not waive it anymore.  If there are any doubts, I can find it and refer you to it.

You can still waive in.  See 37 C.F.R. 11.7(d)+.

37 CFR 11.7(d)(1) has provisions for employees hired after 2004to waive the registration exam.  The criteria are different than for employees hired before 7/2004 or for employees who had four years in at July 2004.

Even if you could, I am not sure why anyone would waive the patent bar exam.   You are truely missing out on very memorable experience.

Agree with Tata. If you have worked at the USPTO for 4 years, and taking/passing the Bar is a problem, you have bigger problems!
