I have heard from a few vague sources that if you work for the USPTO for a certain amount of time... you can waive the patent bar.  Is this true?

Or perhaps it means one can only work as a patent agent inside the Office itself.

Check here.  You will note it says may and that it's up to the Director.  Maybe someone else can comment upon the realities of this situation and what may means in this context.

cannot recite the details, but the link points to a very old version of the rules.   The rules on waiving the registation exam have changed substantially.   There is no longer a fixed four year time frame, and the criteria are more objective than they used to be although it probably will still take many examiner's four years or longer.   You can find discussion in the forums if you search for it.

I'm not really sure why people are so eager to avoid the patent bar exam, unless they don't qualify to take it under the current rules.  It's only a few months of studying ( ), compared to potentially several years of working for the USPTO.
