Self study using only an outline and the MPEP may not be for everyone.  Some of the professionally offered courses include video or audio lectures, slides summarizing key areas, detailed explanations of difficult points in the MPEP, and other study aids.

It's also possible to purchase courses which include several days of  live instruction.

At least one of the courses provides materials useful to actually practicing patent law as opposed to simply taking the exam.  Most courses are oriented strictly to passing the exam.

The commercially offered courses do cost substantially more than $25, but many test takers find those courses to be cost effective.  

If you are going to use self study of the MPEP and an outline, I'd recommend that you supplement your study by practicing past exam questions.  There are some old exams (with answers) on the PTO web site, but I expect that those will be eventually removed.  I think PLI makes some old exams available from their internet site.
