Hey everyone,

If you veterans had to pick the top city for "action" in the biotech/nanotech arena over the next 20 years which one would you choose?  "Action" is a loose combination of government, university and start-up activity in sponsoring, developing and commercializing bionanotechnology.  Obviously, Boston, NC, San D and San Fran.  But what about the tier 2 cities.  Is NYC active or will it be?  What about Dallas or Austin?
What about abroad?

New Jersey appears to be pretty good.  Probably not NYC though.

There's talk of Philly and Minneapolis as cities who are trying to get biotech research areas together.  Philadelphia, in particular.  Austin and Dallas are more telecom, though Austin does have a lot of manufacturing in biotech because of taxes, workforce vs. wages, etc.  Not alot of biotech R&D goes on in Texas.... Houston may be the brightest spot in the state but it's more pharmaceutical that biotech.

Lots of pharmaceutical activity in New Jersey, however (as stated by someone else).  If you're interested in the northeast, Boston is your best shot.  Biotech centers are notoriously hard to get up and running due to the vast amount of money they suck down during the startup phase.  I can't imagine more than 5 big biotech areas in the US for the next several decades (Boston, San Fran, San Diego, RTP, maybe Philadelphia)

Stay tuned for the soon to come decision as to where the institute for stem cell research HQ will be located in California. The institute will be granting $300 million a year in grants, for 10 years, for stem cell research. It is speculated that the location for the institute will attract lots of startups.

Most likely the location will be Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose or San Diego.

Is there anything happening in DC area regarding biotech patents....I assume via law firms rather than companies (since there are none)?

Actually, there are quite a number of biotech companies just a couple of miles north of DC in Maryland (The I-270 Biotech corridor).....

Thanks, DB!  I looked on Biospace for more info and found a listing that they called BioCapital
