Discussion regarding online ip courses

(1/1)

mciotola:

I am an instructor who has taught intellectual property-related courses for non-lawyers for several years, but this spring my department is breaking the distance barrier and providing an online course (see info below, also posed in Announcements).  This course isn't for lawyers (alas, no CLE!), but I would value any comments regarding this or any other online intellectual property courses.

DAI 475 Intellectual Property is an introductory course.  It is suitable for persons who are new to intellectual property or has only modest or narrowly-focused knowledge.  It is too basic for an engineer or lawyer with broad and extensive intellectual property experience.  DAI 475 covers most areas of intellectual property, but it is possible for the student to somewhat emphasize one particular area such as patents.

One limitation is that the course is primarily geared towards U.S. intelectual property law, although many of the concepts are applicable internationally.  There is some international discussion, but this is not a strength of the course.

The course is one unit, which translates into about one hour of course interaction (emails, forums, reading course presentations), one hour of other readings and one hour of homework assignments (to turn in) per week for a minimum of three hours.  However, if you have a strong interest, there are additional optional readings and activities, including for more advanced students.

This course is suitable for students anywhere there is a relaible internet connection.  Since the course is totally online, I am told by my University that a U.S. VISA is not required.  However, if you wish to take further courses and finish an entire degree (such as a Bachelors or a Masters), then you would have to come to the U.S. and get a VISA.  But just for this single course, no VISA is required.

I am not familiar with any other stand-alone, online intellectual property courses.  However, it might be possible to enroll in an entire online degree program that would include intellectual property courses.  Examples could include University of Texas, University of Adelaide and possibly one or more schools in India.

mciotola:
FYI, for those who expressed an interested in the below course, phone registration ends on January 23rd!  It is possible to register by mail afterwards, but this is more difficult and requires an instructor signature.
