Info relating to a computer system
« on: 11-07-06 at 08:45 am »

I have developed new software, however, I need to show how a system works with the software.  Can I say

client + internet + system (includes the computer + software + database)

Is this the minimal amount necessary for the system?

While I work almost exclusively in software/Internet applications, I'm not sure what to make of the question.  Are you expecting that one line to be your entire patent application?  I'm guessing not, because that would be ludicrous.  But I'm not sure what you mean by the pluses.

Without knowing more, I'm going to say that what you've suggested doesn't even come close to the minimum amount of disclosure required for a patent application -- at least one that have half a chance at issuing as a patent.

You have to describe your system in sufficient detail that a person of ordinary skill in the relevant technology and make and use your invention as defined by your claims.  And, you claims have to be non-obviuous of all that came before.

Regards.

I have novel software. It can be used in a computer system or network.  I was just wondering what is the best way to describe the system, client accesses the system, within the system, there is something that runs the software, a database and a processor. I just do not know how these elements function with my software to describe it. How does software work within the computer? - to the degree required for one skilled in the art, user uses client, client accesses system using network system has a computer that reads software, system access database and provides information to user

I'm sorry but there's no general rule of thumb as to how to go about describing your invention.  It depends entirely on what your invention is.  If you don't know how to explain it to the average Internet application developer, you should learn what you need to know to describe that.  If your invention relies on existing and known infrastructure, simply point that out and identify the infrastructure required.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

It sounds like you need to know how someone accesses software over the internet or you have a website.

I think there are  few websites that can give you a general overview.  I think generally a client requests services from a server, sometimes over a network.  There can be many types of servers over the internet.   The server provides services to the client.  A web server will deliver web pages to the client.   A server can be comprised of a few databases, a few computers and a few applications.
