Adding this to a method claim

when using a method claim, I understand that the claim should be drafted by using steps or processing or action words, however, in the dependent claims that follow I have seen applications where applicants were claiming with nouns and such, is this proper?

I'm pretty sure that the use of noun is not what you really mean to object to.

But it is not unusual for a method claim to recite at least a little structure to be used in carrying out the method, you might well have have dependent method claims that further limit that recited structure.
