Question about being a patent agent
« on: 09-29-06 at 05:52 pm »

In what ways would the subject matter taught in law school courses on patents which is not related to prosecution (ie. - litigation) better enable an examiner to do his/her job?

I would think your ability to read and write fast in legal context, spot the issues, and perform legal analysis, etc.

I would expect that much of the subject matter related to litigating the validity of patents is closely related to the law applied during examination.   Further, an exposure to litigation concerns might enhance an examiners ability to appreciate and anticipate the applicants concerns during prosecution.

I don't personally believe that an examiner will learn any writing skills during law school that will be of any significant help on the job.
