Getting copyright and trademark experience
« on: 07-27-04 at 09:29 am »

I am an attorney who wants to practice copyright and trademark law. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can gain experience in this area of law. All of the jobs that I see want  3 or more years experienceand I do not have that. I'm in the New York area and would consider anything that would get me some experience. I welcome all suggestions that can give me insight on volunteering, jobs, cle or training programs of any sort in this practice area.

Sincerely,
Frustrated

I am interested in your plight. I am just starting out, trying to head in the direction of copyright law. I havent even taken the LSAT yet, but want to know how to get experience in that area.
I  guess a person would need to intern or shadow at a firm that specializes in copyright law. Let me know what you find out.
Personally, I am looking for law firms that do that, so I can begin correspondence with them, expressing my interest and hopefully build a relationship that will lead to experience. Thus, when I have passed the bar, I will be more likely to gain entrance to this field.

You may also benefit from a temporary relocation. If you are in New York and the market is dominated by large, competitive IP firms, try moving to a less competitive market (perhaps in rural Montana) to a firm that may have less IP business, but more opportunities to share the experience of that business with you.

Unlike the situation for practicing as a patent attorney,
someone who wants to temporarily relocate to gain experience
is going to have to take a new bar exam.  Maybe it's the
only way, but it sure would be painful.
