If the software upgrade is to more sophisticated software a la phpBB or the like, I'll rescind my pervious "three cheers" criticism.  ;-)

I am having a hard time figuring out if you like phpBB or dislike it.

I was thinking of upgrading to YABB 2.1 because there is good community support and I am comfortable with Perl.  I have not used php.

Anyways, if you have any preferences, likes/dislikes or wishes let me know.   I am thinking about upgrading this weekend.

One thing I want to fix is the slowness when you go to post your message.  I should be able to fix that.

I strongly dislike YABB.  Chief among my dislikes is the inability to subscribe to threads or receive notices from threads I'm participating in, and the inability to jump to the first unread post in any thread.

Why would you need to know any Perl, PHP or anything else?    Does YABB require that level of knowledge?  None of the other mature BB software packages do, in my experience.

I think I might have confused you by referring to my "three cheers criticism".  I previously made a joke suggesting I was going to withhold giving you any cheers, but would revoke that if you switched away from YABB.  Not the clearest of humor, I suppose, but not unusual for me. ;-)

Case-in-point is the recent trouble we were having with spam.  Being able to modify the software allows me to deal with these types of problems.  I have programed certain other custom modifications to the software.

There is some ability to subscribe to posts but I have it turned off.  I am not sure if it is thread specific.  Perhaps the new software will allow this.  I will look into it.

Got your comment on being able to jump to the unread portions of a thread.

For a very brief period of time I was a forum administrator.  I used phpBB and found it very robust, easy to install and maintain, feature rich, and amply supported by an active developer/user community.  It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of vbulletin, but that one's not free.

Jeff,

Thanks for the suggestion on phpBB.  I think I am going to install it and give it a try.  They will soon be coming out with version 3 so I will install that when it comes out.
